Cheryl Agulnick Hochberg

Cheryl Agulnick Hochberg is an Arizona-based printmaker and painter. Her projects explore the idea of “place”. She begins her projects by spending extensive time in locations where she is a stranger; where people, ecology, landscape, and wildlife are all unfamiliar. By walking and exploring, she gathers material that becomes her creative content.

Cheryl’s recent work has been generously supported by Artist Residency opportunities that allow her to work on site and to explore efficiently. In recent years (since 2016), she has worked at Ucross and Jentel Arts in Wyoming, Playa Summerlake in Oregon, Guttenberg Arts in New Jersey, the Guanlan Original Printmaking Base in Shenzhen, China, and most recently, the Ratamo Center for Printmaking and Photography in Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Particularly well-known for her printmaking, Cheryl’s relief prints were included in the 2024 Taiwan International Printmaking Biennial, the 3rd International Print Biennial in Yerevan, Armenia, in the Wuhan Biennial (China), in several exhibitions at the China Printmaking Museum (Shenzhen, China), as well as in numerous exhibitions throughout the US.

In 2023, Cheryl’s studio practice was highlighted in the Smithsonian Channel’s ArtNation “Earthworks” episode. Other publications that featured her practice and projects include “Hoboken Girl” and EcoTheo Review. Cheryl is regularly invited to speak about printmaking and her work, with recent public lectures at the University of Wyoming, the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, and the Guanlan Forum at the China Printmaking Museum. She was a 2024 recipient of a NJ Individual Artist Grant.

Cheryl was Professor of Art at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania from 1990-2018, chairing the Department of Art and Art History from 2009-1017. She retired in 2018 with Professor Emeritus status.
